Changi Youth Club Videos

Thanks to Dave Roberts for these two videos showing photo\'s of Changi Youth Club members 1963-66. He was serving in RAF and was responsible for organising and running the Club.

The two storey building to the centre left of the photo was the Signal Training Centre (STC) which in my Dad's time was run by Sub Lt. Singleton who trained any signalmen who came up from the fleet. The station was a communications training base for many passing servicemen.

The two buildings to the south of the rectangle road were 2 remaining barracks (the foundations of former barracks can be seen around the rectangle. Opposite those barracks are 2 bungalows lived in by CPOs Warmsley and Maddox.

In the trapezium shaped road to the right is a long white bungalow which was the police quarters and the green area within the trapezium shaped road is where they held the Muniandi festival.

The straight road leading north from that area goes past the cinema on the left and several storage buildings including the diesel storage unit. The road then bends round to the left past the Popperwell's house on the right. It then passes behind the main buildings of the station. You can just see the east facing wall of our bungalow before the road disappears behind the microwave tower. From that road you could look out over the aerial field to the northeast. I believe this is now where the Singapore army Signal School is. I think Kranji Expressway now runs beneath this point in the valley between the former aerial field and the hill rising to the station.

Naval Base Housing340 views1969. One of the detached residences (No 101) on Wellington Road allocated to civilian staff posted to Singapore. These overlooked the Dockyard Swimming Pool (now called The Terror Club) and the football pitch. Different from the regular 'Black & Whites' as these had living accommodation on the ground floor and bedrooms upstairs. Note the cowboy style swing doors downstairs and the drop down cane blinds (we called them chiks) upstairs. All to aid ventilation and cooling of the property. Jun 16, 2025

Our bungalow at 12th Mile62 viewsOn arriving in Singapore in 1958 before being allocated an official residence on the Naval Base we found a newly built bungalow to rent (No 12 of about 16 on the site) at 12th Mile on the Sembawang Road. The bungalow had running water but no electricity supply. Lighting, cooking and the fridge all ran on kerosene which was delivered in large metal tins every couple of weeks. Today the bungalow has been redeveloped and stands on Jalan Mata Ayer.Jun 16, 2025

Our pet monkey51 views1961. Our pet monkey 'Beppy' going for a walk from Fiji Road with Pete. He could usually be trusted to go off lead but on one occasion escaping his lead from home Beppy managed to find the nearby Tennis Courts where he proceeded to unscrew the huge floodlight bulbs. Most people on the Naval Base around 60-61 will know of 'Beppy' and his antics. Jun 16, 2025
